Dyslexia is a learning disability that impairs a person's ability to read, and which can manifest itself as a difficulty with phonological awareness, phonological decoding, orthographic coding, auditory short-term memory, and/or rapid naming. Dyslexia is separate and distinct from reading difficulties resulting from other causes, such as a non-neurological deficiency with vision or hearing, or from poor or inadequate reading instruction. It is estimated that dyslexia affects between 5 and 17 percent of the population. There are three proposed cognitive subtypes of dyslexia: auditory, visual and attentional. Although dyslexia is not an intellectual disability, it is considered both a learning disability and a reading disability. Dyslexia and IQ are not interrelated, since reading and cognition develop independently in individuals who have dyslexia. From Wikipedia under the

I am a home tutor and I have a 7 year old kid who exhibits symptoms of dyslexia. The school has identified her as one of the students with weaker language learning skill. The school has given some supplementary notes to help her, but I wanted to do more. Is there any way to better teach a dyslexia child? And also, her attention span is extremely short and likes to argue with me, not following my instructions. Any way to catch her attention? Thanks. What helped my daughter when at school and home was; Using different coloured chalk/white board markers for each paragraph, especially if student is to copy from the board (my daughter was mostly able to keep up with the teacher with this method). Coloured paper for handouts etc. A list of most commonly mispelt words, and a list of words that sound the same, but have different spelling, e.g which, witch, where, wear, were etc (these type of words get me all the time, and I have to check the dictionary or spell check to make I am using on the right word). Coloured film overlay placed over the words on a book, this may help with reading. When reading use larger font books, and read slowly, but never out… [cont.] Answered by Georgie - Thu Feb 28 07:26:25 2008 What are 5 strategies for a regular teacher to teach students with dyslexia? You don't say what grade level you teach, but here are some things that work in upper elementary, middle school, and secondary classes. 1. Reduce the processing load. When possible, give shorter reading assignments to your students with dyslexia; reduce the number of multiple choice options on tests and quizzes. 2. Allow students to listen to text on tape when it is available. 3. Allow students to use manuscript instead of cursive, and allow them to word process any assignments possible. 4. Increase the font size of print materials. Most people with dyslexia find reading larger print easier. You can print out copies of teacher-made materials in a large font and enlarge assignments from your textbook etc. on the photocopier. … [cont.] Answered by Edwina - Mon Apr 9 19:59:09 2007 How do you cope with your dyslexia?
Q. Dyslexia causes problems in reading, writing and spelling. Some dyslexics have problems with math. I am interested in knowing how those with dyslexia cope/deal with these learning problems on a daily basis. Asked by dyslexiaguy - Sun Mar 16 23:36:51 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. It takes a lot of patience with your self. I have dyslexia and it is a challenge. I read slower to understand what I am reading . As for writing, I tried to do the same and just re-read. I have problems with math and what I do is take four problems and solve them and I do this once a day until I finally understand and memorise how to do the formula. You have to find ways to learn, for example I do better at night, so therefore I study at night. I have become detailed when it comes to reading and writing. I try to catch myself when I make the mistake. Answered by sparrow - Sun Mar 16 23:56:20 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Dyslexia" |
