Dyslexia is a learning disorder that manifests itself as a difficulty with reading and spelling. It is separate and distinct from reading difficulties resulting from other causes, such as a non-neurological deficiency with vision or hearing, or from poor or inadequate reading instruction. It is estimated that dyslexia affects between 5% to 17% of the U.S. population.

Dyslexia is thought to be the result of a neurological defect, and though not an intellectual disability, it is variously considered a learning disability, a language disability, and a reading disability, among others. Dyslexia is diagnosed in people of all levels of intelligence.

Is it better for people with dyslexia to receive early interventions rather than to compensate it?
Q. Is it better for a person with dyslexia to get special help when they are young or older? If a person with dyslexia tries to get by in school by compensation methods, will that cause more harm when they are older? If it is better, then why are there still people who use compensation methods to get by in school if this will just create more problems?

A. Yes, the earlier the intervention the better. However, there are no cures for learning disabilities (Dyslexia), so one of the best things we can do is teach children to compensate as soon as possible. The more they can use strategies that assist them with learning, the better off they will be. There will come a time when there is no one to do this for them and they must know how to do it for themselves. Interestingly, we have gifted children who have various learning disabilities and often they think of their own strategies to get around their learning problems. Unfortunately, special ed has hit hard times and most teachers are just interested in how much they can jam into a kid's head. Teaching them strategies that will help them go… [cont.]

My 18 year old son has dyslexia and it is making it difficult for him to study well. How can he be helped?
Q. My son's dyslexia is a real handicap and I'm sure that it makes life more difficult for him than it should be. I want to help him. I am told that he has left to right dyslexia and top to bottom dyslexia. Can he be helped? Large print? Special fonts? Use of computers? Use of tinted transparent sheets? Special lighting? Some kind of training? Some kind of brain reprogramming? Other special techniques? Short term and long term solutions would be welcome.

A. Certainly I would make sure that all special help that was available was accessed and usually that needs a formal diagnosis / assessment. It will be difficult to avoid text and reading altogether, but any ways to bypass the necessity will make it easier for him when he cannot avoid it. For example, there are lots of sound resources and podcasts that can be used on a computer or mp3 device - search for educational podcasts or search for specific resources (for example I located a lovely 1950's radio production of 'of mice and men' for his GCSE's. Here is just one link that might be of use Also, the mindmapping software Inspiration was first used in the UK to help dyslexics - it actually has a much wider use for all abilities. As well… [cont.]

Is it possible for Dyslexia to get more severe over the years?
Q. I have a mild case of Dyslexia, but it seems that recently, it's getting worse. Is that possible? Could Dyslexia get more severe over time?
Asked by fiouri_10 - Sun Jun 15 06:03:25 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Dyslexia can be compounded by stress. As we get older and take on more responsibility, we increase our stress load, making dyslexia seem more severe.
