A. Newportt, You have a complicated history and have been on a number of medications along with a variety of side effects with most of them. The doctor doesn't want you to get into that circle of medications, interactions and more side effects. So he is giving you one of the older but most effective medications for irritability/anxiety with the fewest side effects. Many folks think that the newer meds are the best ones to use because they are the most updated. In fact, they may have more side effectts and interactions as time goes by, since they're untested out in time with newer medications. So until the newer meds are tested in time many doctors prefer to have the side effects and interactions happen to other doctors patients and be… [cont.]

What herb or supplement is good for agitation and extreme irritability?
Q. I'm not depressed I just feel very edgy, lose my temper easily and overreact to things. Please don't tell me to go for counselling! I'm taking 5htp at night plus Valerian and Rhodiola Rosea each morning. I need something to help me mellow out! I don't do prescription drugs because of the side effects. Please don't suggest hard drugs.

Is my increased irritability due to Lamictal?
Q. I'm on a Prozac, Strattera, Lamictal combination. The first 4 weeks, I only had Prozac and Strattera, and it showed to be working out fine. I added Lamictal 5 days ago, in which I am only taking 25 mg. I've sensed an increase of dramatic outbursts, and irritability in the last couple days. I was wondering if it was possible that it could be the Lamictal so early in the treatment or am I just going downhill?

A. Supposedly the Nicotine is out of your system in 48 hours or so. I think the irritability you feel is missing your beloved habit. It was like I was living life with out an arm or something. I quit for 9 months. The hardest thing to do was anything I associated with the habit of smoking. My friends on my volleyball league smoked, so that was hard when I started the league again. I know for sure the Nicotine was out of my system at that point, but that jealous feeling and irritability was still there. I tried sucking on straws. That helped, believe it or not! I even tried smoking cinnamon sticks, but that didn't work as well as I envisioned. Ultimately I started smoking again, but I firmly believe it was not the Nicotine that I craved. I don' [cont.]

What kind of meds are best for Agitation/Irritability?
Q. I get agitation/irritability from my Zoloft. I take zoloft 100mg every day for panic attacks and it works excillent for that. I've had agitation/irritability problems ever since starting the zoloft. I don't feel like stopping the drug since I don't want to relapse. I also have a dx of Asperger's disorder which it could be related to as well but don't know. The doctor wrote me a script for Risperdal 0.5mg which I have taken for about 3 weeks now and has modertately helped. I'm afraid to adjust the dosage because of the risks associated with anti-psychotics. I refuse to take Lithium or Depakote or Tegratol because of the risk of toxicity. I also refuse to take Lamictal because I don't want to develop a rash. I know I should try them… [cont.]

A. Zoloft increased my irritability too. I would try a different SSRI that makes you calmer like Lexapro. I gave up on SSRIs and now take a mood stabilizer. I'm afraid to take anti-psychotics for fear of getting dystonia. And I'm like you, I refuse to take Lithium for fear of killing my thyroid. I wouldn't mind trying Lamictal and probably should, but the fear of getting that rash is too much for me. I already was burned my skin once at work and the fear of aggravating my skin again is too much for me. I'm on topamax which is a mood stabilizer. It worked really good in the beginning for my anger, but not anymore. I think it was better before because I was on the high blood pressure medication Atenenol before which is a beta blocker. … [cont.]

Are there any women who have had Extreme Depression/Irritability from Arm Inserted Birth Control?
Q. My wife the other day became so angry with me she threatened to kill herself. She is on Birth Control. The type that is surgically attached in the arm. She's gotten way out of control and gained a lot of weight from it. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had these sort of affects. I know weight gain is common from it, but has anyone else had this Explosion of Hormones usually making you extremely irritable or depressed?

A. I lost weight after having it inserted. So much so the doctor told me it maybe best he took it out as i was already apparently "underweight" to start with. No mood swings either since having it done. I suffered from depression before having it done and it's not made anything better or worse, only circumstances etc have had an effect, nothing to do with the implant. I don't think, from my experience it's got anything to do with the birth control, maybe best if you actually seek medical advice as after all, they are the folks paid to know what to do/think!

A. Yes, there are artificial hormones your doctor can give you to give you what you are lacking and/or balance what you may have too much of. I had a blood test done by a doctor to determine my hormone levels and she said I was lacking progesterone. Once I starting taking progesterone, I was no longer the wicked witch of the west lol. Being on the low dose birth control pill can help too, even if you aren't having sex. Birth control pills are hormones.

A. Well, first of all I hope it helps with both the mood swings and the hot flashes. I do not think that what helps one woman will also help the other, on the other hand HRT does help with hot flashes but has its dangers too. Here is a page with several sites dealing with Prempro side effects. You do not need to stop taking it just you need to consider all the dangers. I am sure you gynecologist said the same? (I am a woman by the way).

Has anyone ever heard of PREDNISONE causing irritability and anger?
Q. I have been on prednisone for a little over three years to manage an auto immune disease, I take 7 1/2 mg daily. Lately I have felt very irritable and I get angry and yell more than usual. I am normally a very easy going person, but I don't feel like myself lately, but I have also been under a lot of stress for a while. I sometimes feel like I can't control my emotions. I just wondered if anyone knows if these symptoms could be related to the drug.
