What happens to ingested cellulose in humans?
Q. Could someone tell me what happens when humans ingest cellulose? Where does it go; what does the body do with it? What exactly is cellulose? Thanks.
Asked by thegirlwantstoknow - Mon Jul 24 22:13:56 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Cellulose is commonly observed in woody plants (basically its the smallest building blocks above cells in a tree). Ingested, it's harmless to humans, but it is very tough stuff. It doesn't digest well. What does break down in the acids in a human stomach should break into sugars and be absorbed into the blood stream. Most would pass through as waste.

Is what is found inside a battery toxic or dangerous if ingested by a dog?
Q. I'm hoping some of you with understanding in this area can clear something up (I tried to google it, but not a lot of luck.) The dog section gets a lot of questions about people's dogs eating a double A battery or similar. Usually, the responses that follow are "OMG battery acid will KILL any living thing." Now is this at all true? What risks are there with a dog ingesting what is found inside the battery?
Asked by . - Thu Feb 12 22:45:36 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Well it totally depends on what type of battery. NiCad, Lithium, Nickel-Hydrate, Lead-Acid, Ion, Carbon...etc. If its a Nickel hydrate I would worry ,otherwise I wouldn't.

What cleaning products are fatal if ingested?
Q. There are so many cleaning products out there now. Most of the "green" ones are way too expensive. But do they have chemicals in them that are harmful to children or pets?
Asked by Theia - Sat Feb 7 14:30:39 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Most of the regular spray cleaners are various soaps and detergents with water and coloring. probably not very toxic, but still should not be consumed. Worst ones would be things like sodium hydroxide (lye, drain & oven cleaners), sulfuric acid (drain cleaners), hydrochloric acid (lime removers, concrete etchant, etc). phenol and phenol derivatives (disinfectants, Lysol), thiourea, (Tarnex) sulfamic acid (toilet bowl cleaners, coffee percolater cleaner), methyl alcohol (gas line anti freeze) [not a cleaner, but frequently found around the house and no andidote]. I suspect that just because something is "green" doesn't necessarily mean it is harmless if consumed. If you have young children, it would be better to keep all such products,… [cont.]

what chemical if ingested causes the body to produce toxic gases to be excreted?
Q. My first aid class was asking and I couldnt tell them. I know this can happen but I dont know what sort of poisoning can produce the effect whereby the body becomes lethal to others
Asked by Allie R - Mon Nov 19 01:37:26 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Well, that's sort of extreme, but, maybe if someone ingests an important amount of a cyanide, such as sodium or potassium cyanide, it will react with the acid in the stomach and (in addition to death to the poor guy who ingests it) will produce hydrogen cyanide - a toxic and possibly lethal gas to whoever breathes nearby. Same could happen with certain sulfides, but maybe to a lesser extent, such as sodium sulfide and sodium bi-sulfide. The acid reaction in the stomach will generate hydrogen sulfide, also poisonous to whom would attempt to give mouth to mouth breathing (Hydrogen has an extremely pungent and repulsive odour, so it is unlikely someone would attempt it). There is another case, if the person ingest some hydrogen… [cont.]

What should I do if I ingested Isopropyl Alcohol?
Q. I use a syringe to get medicine up my nose. I was cleaning it out with Isopropyl Alcohol, and I didn't dispose the alcohol completely. I got the medicine, and I injected a drop or two of it up my nose. I think it went down my stomach. What should I do?

A. if you ingest any more than a little bit, i'd call poison control pronto (or, if you're really scared, start slugging down the grain alcohol - it helps delay metabolism of other alcohols) because it ends up getting converted to acetone (paint thinner) in your liver. ouch.
